Entry for August 12, 2005

OK, so I got home and didn't really feel like I'd been driving all that much, so I packed the family in the car (minus Luke, our Cocker Spaniel) and we drove to Savannah and Tybee Island. We stayed at The Mansion on Forsyth Park. Now, that place is nice. Too bad the service wasn't quite 4 1/2 star. I've had better service at your usual hotel (in Europe). It wasn't bad, just not exceptional.

Their website reservation allows you to add on things like a breakfast and trolley rides. Well, the web said you get to choose from 3 breakfast choices and in the end it was just any regular choice up to the amount that was listed online. So there was no point in getting that online, since you still had to fill out the regular room service breakfast card and it wasn't charged until you did.

I also expected our trolley tickets to be waiting for us when we checked in, but like the breakfast, I had to ask about it and it took awhile for them to figure it out (with the lame excuse on the second day "I'm new here"). Most of the staff was really young so I guess they just don't have the training or the the turnaround is high. On the positive side, they did get us a training potty and some hair mousse (for $6).

Anyway, we enjoyed our stay there, hit the Tybee beaches on Tuesday after checking in and did the trolley ride on Wednesday.

Our son is really into all sorts of space stuff and I95 was right there when we were leaving so I thought why not drop by Kennedy Space Center (again). So we drove down to Cocoa Beach and stayed at the Motel 6 we've stayed the last three times we've been there. We were in for a nasty surprise... Their prices had doubled and their standard crappy room was $85 a night! Last time we were there, housekeeping found a dead guy in one room and we watched our personal CSI: Florida from the pool... It was late and the place is a block from the beach, so I payed it and saved most of the complaints to myself, since the guy in front of me had already taken care of everything I had to say about the price anyway.

All in all a very successful trip. The weather was nice everytime we wanted to be outside (except at KSC, though we only wanted to see the mockup Enterprise shuttle from the gates anyway, and stopped at the Astronaut Hall of Fame to get better pictures of a fake shuttle).
