OK, so we have the following serious contenders:
- Microsoft DRM
- Apple FairPlay
- Coral (http://www.coral-interop.org/, though I think you still need to sign the NDA for real info)
- and now Sun with Project DReaM
We'll see if that turns out to be a dream. Like the article below points out, it isn't an easy thing to get a new DRM system rolled out. Though, I think it isn't as hard as everyone is trying to make you believe it is. I'd think the hardest part is to get portable device support for it. Getting labels behind a new system shouldn't be too hard as long as you can prove it is as robust as the current contenders. Throwing in support in the desktop player only has to be done once, files conversions are automated anyway, and an open-source version would probably be hacked into a lot of portable devices by all the geeks out there.
I would have liked to read something official on the matter, but searching for "Open Media Commons" and "Project DReaM" didn't produce any hits (yet). Oh well.
