TabletKiosk eo V7110

My UMPC arrived. I uploaded pictures from my unpacking ritual:

And here are some first thoughts (I'll be updating this list, so you might want to check back later). I'm just calling them as I see them and this list shouldn't be taken as a positive/negative review. If you have questions about anything just ask me:

  • It gets hot at least when charging the unit .
  • 1024x600 looks great to me.
  • I'm currently installing updates from windows updates. First round is the Genuine Advantage and Windows Installer 3.1 update and a reboot, second round totalled 54 updates at 75MB. Note: I'm installing everything that is available, not just critical / suggested updates, though they comprised the majority. This includes things like .NET Framework 2.0 at 22.4MB. This is no different from any other new PC.
  • The keyboard button on the left side is linked to TIP not DialKeys. This is probably caused by, what someone at Microsoft I spoke with mentioned, the fact that DialKeys doesn't display itself if you run it a second time, it just pops up a silly error message. (My first hack right there).
  • The unit does not ship with OneNote as reported by UMPC Buzz.
  • The WLAN adapter reception seems a little weak. I'm sitting in the far corner of our office where our "public" WLAN is strongest because I can't get a signal in my office (my laptop does, though very weak).
  • Handwriting recognition seems to work great.
  • Speed seems good. I have 512MB / 40 GB 5400 RPM.
  • You have to press hard on DialKeys and/or use your fingernails.
  • Downloading update 36/54.
  • I can't wait to install Yahoo! Go TV on it.
  • I had a little trouble going thru the initial Windows XP setup. For some reason I couldn't get the touch screen to react and I ended up using the mouse / buttons. This could be due to the fact that I received the unit while walking out for lunch and did the install on the street walking to go eat :)
  • The box said that the package includes installation CDs. I couldn't find them and I think this is just a misprint.
  • I don't want my HD in two partitions. I'll be doing a resize or reformat at some point.
  • The battery had about 20-30 mins charge when I opened the package. Keep this in mind when you get yours (and run off for lunch).
  • Installing update 27/54.
  • The "tabletkiosk" and "eo" logos are stickers that I'll probably be removing.
  • The unit comes with two styluses. I'm using the second one as the stand at the moment.
  • I recommend running the screen calibration.
  • I like the white. I'm glad I got it and not the boring black.
  • Remember to get a proper firewall application and virus protection.
  • The documentation and drivers still have some rough edges in the translations: "WWU Application has existed".
  • The BIOS has a customized TabletKiosk boot-up logo screen.
  • It looks like you can customize all the buttons (except mouse buttons obviously) with the Tablet and Pen Settings control panel/application.
  • As usual, Internet Explorer is set to take up a lot of harddisk space (562 MB on mine and probably more if you ordered a larger hard drive).
  • The screen is really nice and bright (two separate things).
  • I got round three on windows updates: 2.1 MB. Also, the optional Winbond Electronics Corp. - Networking - 802.11 b/g USB Wireless Adapter didn't install on the previous round, skipping it for now. Round three required a reboot, too.
  • Ugh, first ugly thing I've come across: The D: partition is FAT32. Understandable, but still ugly.
  • You really need to defragment the D: drive. C: wasn't as bad.
  • No real stand in the package (the one that is mentioned in the manual that is).
  • I'm installing PCMark05 V1.10 to run some tests
  • I made a backup of the D: drive that contains the restore data.
  • I converted the D: drive from FAT32 to NTFS and this is probably not the smartest move on the planet, but I've done my share of installations so I should be able to get things back into shape if I do screw things up big time. I did this because Partition Magic crapped out on the FAT32 filesystem with the drive size and beginning of the partition. The exact error was "#2003 File size does not math FAT allocation for file.". I might have got rid of this simply with a CHKDSK since I ended up running one before I could convert to NTFS (could be a slightly bad image that was used). Anyhoo... I'm in the progress of resizing D: to 3GB and C: to the rest.
  • The eo tried to boot off my external 200GB USB drive. There's another rescue option.

First round of PCMark 05 tests, started under 1024x600, visual settings set to best appearance. (coming soon, I hope. I'm not paying for the program so I'll only get a combined system score and for that I need to install something or other.).

Update: PCMark 05 sucks :) Unless someone donates $20 I'm not going to be getting any real results out of it:

HDD - XP Startup: 5.78MB/s, Physics and 3D 9.24 FPS. Web page rendering 0.54 Pages/s. Graphics Memory - 64 Lines 28.89 FPS. Hd - General Usage 3.71 MB/s
