Y! Messenger Add-In Idea

August 28, 2005 17:20 by docbliny

OK, so the last time I spoke this one aloud I got a few stares and even more "Nice-to-meet-you"s. So I thought I'd give it another shot and save Y! the bandwidth by losing any possible (future) readers of my blog.

Right, still here? This is probably how the "content tabs" work for the current options, but add the following:

1. Make a general add-in that plucks data from the web.
2. Create an "admin/my Y!IM content tabs" web page where Joe Public can log in with their Y! ID and add/remove/modify available "content tabs".
- Let user choose the icon & title for the tab
- Let user choose from all the available content, such as RSS feeds, that is available for My Yahoo! for a specific tab.
3. Give the content tab the option of pointing to a custom web page (a bit like YME has web plugins). This would allow an easy route for developers to add non-Yahoo! content. And you just know someone would come up with a JavaScript add-in to do something really cool.

This would save Y! from creating add-in dlls for specific content, allow the user to choose from a wider variety than is currently available and in general make it a little more extensible.

You could even take this further and make it the same as a Y! mobile version of "My Yahoo!" since the size of the content tabs seems to about what would fit on a phone/PDA screen. You know, the early bird gets shot twice while throwing stones at rabbits.
